The Space
One of Charleston’s Busiest Quick-Service Corridors
This Chick-fil-A location on Dorchester Road is one of the busiest quick-service restaurant patios in North Charleston — and its commercial patio umbrella setup hadn’t kept pace. Set along one of the corridor’s highest-traffic commercial stretches, the outdoor dining area runs at a pace most restaurant patios can’t match. From early morning drive-throughs to afternoon lunch rushes, the space sees a near-constant rotation of guests, staff, and foot traffic throughout the day.
Before the upgrade, the patio’s original umbrellas had deteriorated significantly under the combination of direct sun and daily commercial wear. Canopies had faded, the visual message they sent to guests didn’t match the care and quality the brand communicates inside. What should have been an inviting extension of the restaurant had become an afterthought – uncomfortable, inconsistent, and underutilized.
The opportunity was clear: transform a neglected exterior into a defined, comfortable outdoor destination that could serve guests as reliably as the interior could.
The Challenge
Faded and torn existing canopies no longer provided adequate shade
Sun had degraded materials prematurely
High daily turnover demanded a durable, low-maintenance solution
Unstable umbrella bases created a safety and maintenance burden
Layout limited staff movement and guest seating flow
The Solution
Solution-dyed acrylic canopies built to resist UV, rain, and salt air
Custom Chick-fil-A logo embroidered directly into each canopy
In-table pole mounts with concrete-anchored base hardware
Clean, open layout improving sightlines and staff efficiency
Minimal footprint keeping the patio accessible and uncluttered
Our approach
Built for Daily Commercial Wear
The Palmetto Outdoor Umbrella was the right tool for this job not just because of its looks, but because of how it’s built. Not just a great residential umbrella, each unit can double as a commercial patio umbrella – featuring anodized aluminum poles and rib systems rated for coastal environments, paired with a solution-dyed acrylic canopy that holds its color even after years of intense UV exposure. For a Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) patio with no shelter from the South Carolina sun, that durability isn’t optional – it’s the whole point.
Installation used a through-table pole mount system with custom base hardware anchored directly into the existing concrete pad. This approach eliminates the freestanding base weight that typically clutters restaurant patios, creates clean sightlines for staff monitoring the space, and ensures the umbrellas can’t shift or tip even in gusty coastal wind conditions.
The embroidered Chick-fil-A logo on each canopy was produced in-house at our North Charleston facility – the same canvas and textile fabrication infrastructure LaPorte has operated for over 50 years. The result is a consistent, branded commercial patio umbrellas that hold up to the same standards as the uniforms and interiors the franchise works so hard to maintain.

Outcome
Premium Dining Shade
The impact was immediate. Within the first week, the franchise owner reported that guests were choosing the patio in a way they simply hadn’t before – pausing, sitting down, and staying longer. The combination of reliable shade, a clean layout, and a branded visual identity communicated something to guests that the old setup couldn’t: that this outdoor space was intentional, cared for, and worth using.
For the operations team, the streamlined base mount system removed a persistent maintenance headache. No heavy freestanding bases to move during cleaning. No wobble to address before opening. The system is stable, low-profile, and built to handle the daily demands of a high-volume QSR without any special handling.
For franchise operators and property managers evaluating commercial patio umbrella options, the Dorchester Road install is a working proof of concept – five units, one day, zero disruption to operations.
