The Space
Rooftop Dining Above Shem Creek
Perched above the waters of Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, Saltwater Cowboys has one of the most enviable rooftop settings on Charleston’s coast. Open water views, a consistent breeze off the creek, and enough room for both large gatherings and intimate meals – the bones of a standout outdoor dining destination were already there.
The rooftop layout includes open seating alongside rail-adjacent tables that put guests right at the edge of the view. On a calm evening with good shade, it’s the kind of space people talk about. The problem was getting it there.
The Challenge
Off-the-shelf umbrellas faded, broke, and required mid-season replacement year after year
Standard hardware couldn’t handle rooftop wind exposure on an open coastal setting
Incomplete coverage left gaps in shade directly over guest seating
Guests avoided the rooftop during peak afternoon hours, limiting revenue on the restaurant’s best asset
Inconsistent and worn umbrella appearance undercut the quality of the overall dining experience
Rail-adjacent table placement made standard freestanding base solutions unworkable
The Solution
10 rooftop dining umbrellas with 8-foot Sunbrella Black canopies installed across the full rooftop
Custom rail mount hardware fabricated in-house at LaPorte, built directly into the existing rooftop railing
Rail-integrated mounting eliminated freestanding bases entirely, keeping the floor clear and sightlines open
Marine-grade aluminum frames and Sunbrella fabric specified for continuous coastal wind and UV exposure
Minimal Complete canopy coverage across all seating zones, including rail-adjacent tables previously left exposedkeeping the patio accessible and uncluttered
Clean, cohesive black canopy finish that elevated the rooftop’s aesthetic without competing with the view
Our approach
Custom Rooftop Dining Umbrellas Built for Coastal Conditions
The Saltwater Cowboys rooftop presented a specific engineering problem – rail-adjacent seating on an open, wind-exposed deck above tidal water. Off-the-shelf umbrellas had already proven they couldn’t handle it. The answer wasn’t a better version of the same solution; it was a different approach entirely.
LaPorte fabricated custom rail mount hardware in-house, anchoring each Palmetto umbrella directly into the rooftop railing rather than relying on freestanding base weights. On a rooftop with consistent coastal wind, the difference between a base-mounted and rail-integrated umbrella isn’t aesthetic – it’s whether the umbrella stays upright on a busy Saturday afternoon in July.
Each rooftop dining umbrella was fitted with an 8-foot Sunbrella Black canopy – a solution-dyed acrylic fabric that holds its color and structure under prolonged UV and salt air exposure without fading or stiffening. The uniform black finish across all ten units gave the rooftop a deliberate, cohesive look that felt intentional rather than assembled from whatever was available.
The result was complete shade coverage across every seating zone, including the rail-adjacent tables that had never been properly covered before.

Outcome
From Underused to Unmissable
The rooftop ran at full capacity through the summer – guests lingered over food and drinks without the heat cutting their visit short, and the waterfront views became the draw they were always meant to be rather than a selling point undermined by uncomfortable conditions.
The owners were satisfied enough with the transformation that they followed the umbrella installation with new lighting and synthetic turf, committing fully to a rooftop reimagination that the shade upgrade had made worthwhile. The umbrellas didn’t just solve a shade problem – they gave the owners confidence that the space could perform at a level worth investing in further.
What had been one of Mount Pleasant’s most underutilized rooftop dining spaces became one of its most talked-about.
