The Space
A Brewery Greenspace Built for Gathering
Located in the heart of North Charleston, Holy City Brewing‘s outdoor spaces have always had the right ingredients — a sprawling lawn built for crowds, a dock overlooking the water, and the kind of laid-back family-friendly energy that makes a brewery a neighborhood institution. The setting invites guests to stay well past the first round.
What the space lacked was structure. Without defined zones and reliable shade, the lawn and dock remained underutilized — pleasant in theory, uncomfortable in practice during Charleston’s long, hot summers. The potential was obvious. Getting there required a deliberate approach to shade, seating, and how the space was organized around both.
The Challenge
Unshaded lawn and dock drove guests back inside during peak afternoon heat
No defined seating zones left the greenspace feeling unorganized and underused
Existing picnic tables lacked shade, limiting their usability to cooler parts of the day
High foot traffic and family-friendly events demanded durable, low-maintenance solutions
The brewery needed shade that felt designed into the space rather than dropped in as an afterthought
The Solution
5 Palmetto umbrellas in Sunbrella Capri mounted through existing picnic tables, creating shaded gathering points across the lawn
4 Palmetto Ebb Tide dining packages with Sunbrella Terracotta canopies added as dedicated dining zones
2 Palmetto umbrella and Bourbon Chair lounge setups with Sunbrella Tresco Linen canopies installed on the lawn for relaxed seating
Custom embroidered Holy City Brewing umbrellas, creating a branded and cohesive look across the full greenspace
Three intentional canopy colors zoned across dining, gathering, and lounge areas for a designed rather than assembled aesthetic
Our approach
Brewery Greenspace Umbrellas Designed as a System
The Holy City Brewing project wasn’t a single product install – it was a full greenspace shade system built across three distinct zones, each with its own use case and its own product solution.
The existing picnic table zone got five Palmetto umbrellas in Sunbrella Capri, mounted cleanly through the table surfaces to eliminate any base clutter on a high-traffic lawn. The dining zone was anchored by four Palmetto Ebb Tide table packages in Sunbrella Terracotta – complete dining setups that created defined meal destinations within what had previously been open, undefined space. The lounge zone brought two Low Tide Table Sets, each with 4 Bourbon Chair and Ottoman setups under Sunbrella Tresco Linen canopies, giving guests a more relaxed seating option between the energy of the taproom and the openness of the lawn.
On the dock, two Buoy tables added flexible event surfaces capable of handling everything from oyster roasts to live music without any permanent commitment to a single layout.
The result is a greenspace that feels intentional from end to end — not because every piece matches, but because every piece was chosen for a reason.

Outcome
A Greenspace Worth Staying In
The brewery greenspace umbrellas made an immediate and visible impact. Guests began claiming the lawn and dock in a way they hadn’t before – staying longer, spreading across all three zones, and treating the outdoor space as a genuine extension of the taproom rather than an overflow area for when it got crowded inside.
Staff and regulars alike noted the difference. The combination of reliable shade from the brewery greenspace umbrellas, defined seating zones, and consistent branding gave the greenspace a coherence it had always lacked – guests could find a spot that suited them, whether that was a shaded dining table, a picnic table in the Capri zone, or a Bourbon Chair under the Tresco Linen canopy with a view of the lawn.
The brewery responded in kind. Holy City is now planning a greenspace expansion that will add more umbrellas and additional Bourbon Chair lounge seating – a direct signal that the initial installation delivered results worth building on.
